Virginia school takes a second look at policy that suspends and transfers students after being caught possessing drugs

A rash of teen suicides has prompted many schools to re-evaluate awareness programs and policies. Teen depression and stress has led many young individuals to take their own life as a release of the pain they feel.
For instance, a student in Fairfax, Virginia recently took his life after being suspended in November for buying a capsule of a substance known as JWH-018, which is synthetic marijuana, My Fox Washington reports.
Parents of the student told the news source that they believe there is an association between their son's death and the school system's disciplinary policy.
His parents added that he was suspended and transferred to another high school, which took him away from the friends he had since kindergarten. As a result, he became depressed and eventually committed suicide.
Depressed teens often become isolated and withdraw themselves from activities they previously pursued. Family communication may be crucial during adolescence, because most children are directly affected by their parents.
Boot camps for teens can help provide motivation for young individuals who struggle with depression. These programs push adolescents to better themselves and make healthier lifestyle choices.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 34,000 suicides occurred in the U.S. in 2007.
