Video game addiction affects boys and girls differently

Video game addiction, which is not formally recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, may be linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and poor time management skills, Psyche Central reports.
Researchers from Eastern Michigan University sought to find the causal link between video games and poor management skills or symptoms of ADHD.
The study found a gender difference in video games. Males reported having issues related to time management skills as a result or playing more often and for longer durations, but showed fewer maladaptive behaviors.
Meanwhile, researchers found issues were linked to ADHD characteristics in females as a result of playing video games.
Other studies have revealed that pathological gamers were more likely to develop depression, be stressed and have anxiety.
Researchers said that this presents two different treatment approaches. Programs for troubled teens can may help alleviate poor time management skills or some symptoms of ADHD.
According to a 2007 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 5.4 million children between ages 4 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD.
