A recent study released by the British medical journal reveals that alcohol may be the most harmful drug, reports CNN.

Researchers calculate the physical, psychological and social issues caused by drugs and they found that alcohol was the most harmful substance overall. The study revealed that alcohol is three times as dangerous as cocaine or tobacco.

However, the study shows that heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine are the most harmful drugs to individuals who use the substance, while alcohol is the most harmful drug to not only individuals who consume the substance, but also to others who come into contact with them.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, excessive drinking or binge drinking, which are most commonly found in teens, can lead to health dangers that include risky sexual behavior, depression, anxiety and liver cancer.

Programs for troubled youths can help teens by providing educational and recreational activities designed to promote healthy lifestyle choices and goals.

According to a 2006 report by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, nearly 8 percent of the drug and alcohol admissions at treatment facilities in the U.S. involved children under the age of 17.
