A troubling trend is growing in Nebraska where deaths stemming from child abuse continues to increase each year, the Lincoln Star Journal reports. The state currently ranks second behind Florida from deaths occurring from child maltreatment or neglect, according to the nationwide survey.

Studies from Nebraska child advocate agencies found that the state also ranked in the top three for the rate of deaths of children from child abuse or neglect in 2007 and 2008. Furthermore, they stated that the media is not doing enough to bring attention to what they call "a dark American secret."

Officials from the National Coalition to End Child Abuse Deaths told the news source that they are analyzing ways to prevent maltreatment of children by developing a government strategy geared toward strengthening families.

Under this proposal, they plan to increase federal spending by an additional $3 to $5 billion to protect children who are at risk of harm. Furthermore, they aim to conduct a public education campaign to encourage reporting of child abuse and neglect.

Programs for teens can help adolescents who suffer abuse or neglect from family members by offering therapy designed to promote healthy lifestyle choices and social success.
