Lubbock health officials exploring social media options to educated teens about pregnancy
By Staff Writer
The Lubbock, Texas Health Board recently revealed that nearly 350 teens are pregnant in area schools, Fox 34 News reports.
Officials from the health board told the news source that the problem is getting complicated and worse. They recently discussed ideas to help educate teens in the New Year, possibly through social media sites, such as Facebook to teach children about the harmful effects of being pregnant at an early age.
They added that people between ages 13 and 30 years old are the main group the health board is targeting in this new campaign, which can help direct them toward other educational resources.
However, the program has its detractors, such as Mayor Tom Martin who said in a statement that the use of Facebook to teach youths sex education is not appropriate. He added that teaching through social media might lead to issues involving religion and parental responsibility, and that might not be the role of city government.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 435,000 infants were born to teens between ages 15 and 19 in 2008.
