Kentucky could suffer from cuts in Florida's prescription drug-tracking system

America struggles from prescription drug. However, some states are more susceptible to the behavior than others because of the supply.

For instance, Florida's new governor recently said that he wants to eliminate the prescription-tracking system proposed in 2009. But, officials in Kentucky are worried that this measure will hurt their chances of preventing prescription drug abuse in their state, The Washington Post reports.

Kentucky officials told the news source that they believe some of their prescription drug abuse problems stem from Florida's relaxed laws on providing prescription medication. Florida currently suffers from a rash of doctors who fraudulently prescribe medication.

Prescription narcotics such as Oxycontin, Xanax and Vicodin are found in many medicine cabinets across the U.S. As a result, more children have access to these powerful drugs. However, communicating with teens can show them that using prescription medication recreationally can harm their development.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, approximately 15 percent of high school seniors reported using prescription medications recreationally in 2008.
