Parents and teachers are finding that b-Calm headphones can help some children with autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Newton Daily News reports.

Teachers from Arkeny, Iowa told the news source that b-Calm headphones are helping students who suffer from autism or ADHD concentrate on school work and converse with their peers. One parent whose child uses the product added that her son falls asleep more quickly since using them.

The handheld audio sedation device blends recordings of natural environment sounds with noise masking signals. The system was found to most likely help individuals who have noise sensory issues. However, the designer, Ken Budke, told the news source that this device will not work for every child.

Area foundations are attempting to purchase these devices to donate to area families who might benefit from the technology.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one in 110 children suffer from autism. Furthermore, approximately 5.4 million children are currently diagnosed with ADHD.
