Governor issues a ban on dangerous chemicals
By Staff Writer
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal recently issued an emergency order that will outlaw dangerous chemicals sold as bath salts and plant food in the state, Bloomberg reports.
Officials told the news source that the powders can cause paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, hypertension, chest pain and suicidal thoughts. They added that these chemicals can be sold under the names of ivory wave, red dove, hurricane charlie, scarface and white lightning.
Jindal recently urged the federal Drug Enforcement Agency to determine whether the state could be the national distribution center for the chemicals considering that more than half the calls to poison control centers concerning this drug have been from Louisiana.
Furthermore, officials told the news source that the chemicals are made in China and India and cost $20 for a pinch of powder. State investigators confiscated these from nearly 1,000 convenience stores, gas stations and other retailers after a man killed himself following his use of the product "Cloud Nine." Officials from the governor's office noted that the chemicals are banned in the United Kingdom, Israel, Australia and Canada.
