Officials from Johns Hopkins Children's Center said that they are seeing increasing numbers of young people using prescription medication recreationally.
They added that increased prescription drug abuse is likely related related to the growing legitimate use of the substances. They noted that this may result from more doctors prescribing controlled substances than 10 years ago. Furthermore, safeguarding medication at home and closely monitoring their qualities may help adults keep these powerful drug out of the hands of adolescents.
Officials added that they believe that another factor that fuels the widespread abuse of prescription medication is the misconception that they are safe because a doctor prescribes them. They explained that cocaine and heroin carry a dangerous image. However, a pill that adults take and was prescribed by a physician does not seem as hazardous.
Programs for troubled teens may assist individuals who seek substance abuse help by offering drug rehab for opiate addiction.
A 2008 report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse shows that nearly 15 percent of high school students reported abusing prescription medication.
