California teens team up to help promote new city ordinance against underage drinking

Teens from Redlands, California formed a coalition to help push for harder laws against adults who enable minors to drink freely on their property, reports the Redlands Daily Facts.

Officials from the local substance abuse coalitions told the news source that while it is illegal to provide alcohol to minors, it is not against the law to give them a place to use alcohol. However, the Redlands Teen Council is urging legislators to adopt an ordinance that will fine adults who allow underage drinking on their property.

"As teens, we are constantly surrounded by the alcohol and drug scene. I think it is really important that we address what is going on by taking a stance against it," Emma Engelfried, 17, a senior at Grove High School, told the news source.

Teen boarding schools can help children who exhibit risky behavior such as underage drinking, by offering individualized therapy to help them overcome their addictions and make healthier lifestyle choices.

According to a 2008 survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 72 percent of high school seniors said that they have consumed alcohol at least once during their lifetime.
