Family Relationship Problems

The family dynamic today is much different than it was even 30 years ago. Teens now face tremendous pressures unlike those of their parents' generation. Drugs, alcohol, sex and pregnancy are just some of the everyday pressures a typical teen faces, no matter what part of the country he or she lives in. To combat these outside pressures, it is important to have a great family relationship at home.

However, this is often not the case. Many families have relationship problems, ranging from minor to severe. Parents feel helpless and frustrated when troubled teens constantly get into bad situations. Likewise, teens feel alienated and unfulfilled with their home life and relationships with parents or guardians.

There is help. If your family life is in turmoil, there is an endless number of family life education groups, parent support groups, and teen education programs available. Parents and teens shouldn't be afraid to admit that they need help. Often, denial that there is a problem is the largest problem within the family.

Admitting that your family needs help is the first step in the right direction. Remember, there are millions of families just like yours that are struggling every day. Parents didn't have to deal with the things their children do when they were growing up, so there are naturally going to be points of contention among the two groups simply due to lack of understanding. But through counseling, support, and communication, your family can get back on a productive, loving path.
