Nevada Program Reaches Out to Homeless Teens via Text-Messaging Program

According to a Oct. 15 article on the LasVegasNow website, homeless teens in Nevadas Clark County can get help from the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) by sending a text message to a special number:
By texting the word "Safe" and an address, teens can get a text message back with the nearest Safe Place location and a toll free number for immediate help.

Whether they are being abused or just need someone to talk to, organizers hope teens will text for help. "If we get to them before their 18th birthday, if we get to them while they're still in school and working towards goals, then we can help them pursue those goals and become protective members of society," said [said NPHY's Tim Mullin].

Teens have to text the word Safe and their address to 69866. they'll get a text message right back with the nearest Safe Place location.

Nevada Teens Can Text to Find a Safe Place

No one is better at texting than a teenager. Now, this ability can not only keep them in touch with friends, it can keep them safe.

A new program from the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth is taking advantage of the texting craze, according to an Oct. 15 report on CBS Channel 8's Las Vegas Now website:
The National Safe Place Campaign hopes texting will make the program more teen-friendly and make it easier for teens to reach out when they need help.

Teens have to text the word Safe and their address to 69866. they'll get a text message right back with the nearest Safe Place location. It's available 24-hours a day.

Teens Texting More, Sleeping Less and Struggling

Technology has many benefits, but it has its downfalls, too. Today, teenagers spend so much time texting, using video games, and chatting via the Internet that their normal patterns are being disrupted.
For some teens, so much technology has proven distracting and has interfered with their sleep, leading to health problems such as crankiness, headaches, weakened immune systems and impaired concentration. -- Source: Dulcinea Media
The best cure for sleep disorders and sleep-related problems is to turn off the cell phone, computer and video games at least an hour before bedtime, and encourage your teenager to do something else  like read.

2,000 Seek Support

About 2,000 teenagers registered with a text-based emotional support service in its first 48 hours of operation. The service, created in Ireland by an organization called Rehab, provides confidential information about sexual issues, suicide and other issues to young people.
"Designed for 16-24 year olds, Rehab says it is the first service of its kind in Ireland and highlights the way in which 21st century communication can benefit young people."
The numbers were released during a seminar on Suicide and the Internet, which marked the beginning of a five-day 'congress' called "Preventing Suicide Across the Lifespan: Dream and Realities". Read more at Online.Ie.com.
