FDA Warning Premature?

In 2004, research on the dangers of antidepressant medication caused the FDA to issue black box warning. The warning stated that "antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children and adolescents..."
"The result was a decrease in the prescription of antidepressants to teens by over 50%, and an increase in suicides."
The 18% increase in teen suicides has causes many to question whether the FDA acted prematurely in issuing the black box warning. Some are now calling for the warning to be repealed. Experts urge parents to seek medical treatment for their teen if he or she is extremely depressed and/or at risk of attempting suicide. Read more at MovingOutMovingOn.BlogHi.com.

Virginity Pledges Not Much Help

Yale and Columbia Universities have released a study which shows that teens who take virginity pledges aren't any less likely to catch sexually transmitted diseases than teens that don't make the pledge. The pledging teens may wait longer before having sex, but when they do, they're less likely to use a condom and are more likely to experiment with riskier sexual behavior.
"Virginity pledges emerged in the early 1990s based on the theory that young people would remain chaste if they had stronger community support - or pressure - to remain abstinent. Programs vary, but in most cases teenagers voluntarily sign a pledge or publicly announce their intention to abstain from sex."
Over 60% of the young people who participated in the survey-based study and took virginity pledges reported having sex before they were married. Additionally, just 2% of teens who didn't take virginity pledges said they had had anal or oral sex, as opposed to 13% of those who had taken the pledges. Read more at WashingtonPost.com.

Too Many Teenagers, Too Few Parents, Not Enough to do

The Poconos, in Northern Pennsylvania, has experienced a surge in crimes committed by young people. Between 1990 and 2005, the number of new criminal cases against adolescents increased from 176 to 640 - all of them first-time offenders.
"'Gang activity is on the rise. It is here, and we will be dealing with it for many years,' [Monroe County's Chief Probation Officer Steve] Houloose said. His office has worked with Pocono kids who are admitted members of the Bloods, Crips, Latin Kings and various branches of those gangs."
Houloose and others point to a lack of parental supervision - caused by long commutes which force parents to leave early in the morning and not return until late at night, and an influx of kids from urban communities who struggle to find appropriate activities to keep them busy. Teens Teaching HIV/AIDS Prevention Tips

One result of the Provisio Leyden Council for Community Action summer program was a short film titled "I Want 2 Live". The film was written, shot, and produced by teens in PLCCA's All Stars mentoring program.
"The film starts out with information on how HIV/AIDS is spread, including through sexual contact, the sharing of needles and blood transfusions. To the sounds of an ambulance siren wailing in the background, teens in the film explain the side effects of the disease for which there is no cure."
The film goes on to tout abstinence as the only "fool-proof" way to avoid infection, but acknowledges that using condoms is also important for those who can't, or don't want to, "resist temptation." Read more at PioneerLocal.com.

Students Share Opinions on Criminals

Students from Clinton Middle School in Utica, New York, recently spent two weeks learning about the law and criminal behavior. The students also sat in on court room proceedings in Onieda County Criminal Court. They were then asked to give their opinions on why some young people turn to crime.
"The path to criminal behavior might begin with a bad childhood. If a child is raised in a community that is poor and the only people there to look up to are drug dealers or criminals, this sets an image for the child."
Most of the students agreed that an abusive or neglectful home life and poverty are two possible causes. They also agreed that it's important to get those kids away from abusive or neglectful parents, or have the parents seek counseling, and help them get the education and resources they need for a better life. Missouri Mentoring Program Shared

Recently, at the National Lieutenant Governors Association's annual conference, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder presented a resolution suggesting that states use the Missouri Model as a guide for state-wide mentoring programs.
''A wonderful seed planted right here in Missouri is now to bear fruit all across America. See what happens when we all work together, reaching across party lines to do what is good and right for the people,' Kinder said."
The Missouri Model consists of three parts; a program for children of incarcerated parents, a mentor initiative for state employees, and a partnership between the Department of Corrections and mentoring programs. Read more at News-Leader.com.

Juvenile Justice Tours

Florida's State Attorney's Office, in conjunction with the Florida Prison System, has started giving jail tours to teens and their parents, in an effort to show kids what can happen if they get in trouble with the law.
"[Chief Assistant State Attorney Jay] Plotkin says most studies show teens who come through a program like this will not get in trouble with the law and will understand that if they make the wrong choices they will end up in jail."
During the school year, the program focuses mainly on troubled or at-risk teens, but during the summer it's open to everyone. Read more at FirstCoastNews.com.

Shocking Images may not Deter Teen Drinking

School and police officials in Wyoming are working to determine how best to help teens understand the risks of underage drinking. They're finding that the most common approach - showing shocking images of accident scenes - may not be the most effective.
"'From what I've read, I think the approaches which try to shock students, either through videos of terrible accidents or other videos that emphasize the gruesome nature of things, the conclusions there are they are not effective and may be counterproductive,' [First Lady Nancy] Freudenthal said. Freudenthal isn't exactly sure why that's the case, but said it might be because students typically don't believe bad things can happen to them."
On city has implemented an incentive-based plan that rewards kids who stay drug and alcohol free. Indications are that 80 percent of the students there are participating in the program. Officials also emphasize the importance of parental involvement in the fight against underage drinking and substance abuse. Read more at CasperStarTribune.net.

Talk to Kids about Risky Behavior

Most young people feel like they're invincible. But most also know the truth - that they're not. Still, some engage in risky and sometimes life-threatening behavior because they have little sense of their own mortality. The untimely death of a 14-year-old boy in Ohio has prompted warnings about risky behavior from some experts.
"[Dr. Steve] Liptak said it is important for parents to know their children and be more watchful of those they have found to be risk-takers. A working relationship with the child - knowing what they are doing and where they are going, not interrogating them - is even more important for known risk-takers, he said."
Dr. Bob Barcus also suggests that parents be honest with their teens about what can realistically happen when people take extreme risks. Read more at DaytonDailyNews.com.

Help Center Reaches Out

Though teen pregnancy is on the decline, there are still many young girls and boys who need help balancing the responsibilities of high school and parenting. The HELP Center of Athens, Texas offers a program called PEP (Pregnancy, Education and Parenting) where young people can find the guidance they need.
"According to the center, the PEP program is a dropout prevention program for pregnant and parenting teens... The program offers help during the academic year to anyone enrolled in a Henderson County school and actively attending."
Teen parents meet twice a month with a PEP counselor where they can discuss parenting, career goals and hopes for the future. The center also provides daycare so the parents can continue attending school. Read more at AthensReview.com.

Anti-pregnancy Messages Fall on Deaf Ears

In Calhoun County, Michigan, teen pregnancy is considered an epidemic. It ranks the fourth highest of Michigan's 83 counties for teen pregnancies per capita.
"Teen pregnancy is a complicated thing, [Pat] Horton said. 'It's not just about genitals...It's understanding that teens, especially girls, are looking for respect, love and commitment. Some want to be pregnant, thinking a baby will bring those things, he said."
Unfortunately, many of them are left to care for their babies alone, when the fathers decide they're not ready to be parents. Less than one-third of moms who have their first children before 18 ever earn a high school diploma. Just 1.5 percent earn a college degree before they turn 30. Read more BattleCreekEnquierer.com.

What To Do About Bad Friends

Most parents fear that when their teens reach the teenage years, they're going to develop relationships that lead them down destructive paths. Most teens have at least one friend that encourages bad behavior, but if things get out of control, what should parents do?
"One frequently useful stance is to focus less on the 'evil' friend, and more on the behavior that you want your teenager to avoid. Maybe Danielle's parents don't want her hanging out with Ariel - but more to the point, they don't want her drinking or staying out late."
Addressing the behavior rather than the relationship prevents the teen from becoming defensive about her friend. Through it, you're also communication not just about the types of friends you want her to have, but the way you want her to behave no matter who she's with. Read more at TheGlobeandMail.com.

Council Seeks Grant for Youth Shelter

On Tuesday, the Virginia City Council approved a $150,000 grant submission which would fund a youth foyer project. The project would provide young people with support systems and housing.
"The youth foyer has been in the works for about four years, [Lorrie] Janatopoulos said, and will include 13 efficiency units and 2 two-bedroom units for parenting teens, along with a wide array of support services for the disadvantaged young adults aged 16-21."
The staff for the new foyer would include two caseworkers and two to three night and weekend paraprofessionals. The foyer housing concept is considered a successful model for helping young people achieve self-sufficiency. Read more at VirginiaMN.com.

November may become National Homeless Youth Awareness Month

In June, the House of Representatives heard testimony from - among others - singer/songwriter Jewel about the condition of homeless teens in America. Jewel, herself, was homeless as a teenager and knows firsthand the dangers of the streets and the difficulties of making a better life. The initiative to designate November as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month was launched in conjunction with Virgin Mobile's The RE*Generation campaign aimed at connecting at-risk and homeless youth with people who want to help.
"'A resolution and designated month will go a long way toward building awareness of the more than one million children and teens that are without homes and in crisis,' said Dan Schulman, CEO of Virgin Mobile USA. 'We trust November will serve as a call to action for Americans to learn more about this vital issue, as well as find ways to support the organizations working to help homeless youth in their own communities.'"
As part of the RE*Generation campaign, Virgin Mobile created the TXT2CLOTHE initiative which allows mobile phone users from any wireless carrier to send a text message that results in a piece of clothing being donated to a homeless teen.
