Advice On Family Relationships

Surviving within the dynamics of a family is not an easy task. Think about it: you're born into a family that you did not choose and are thrown into close, personal interactions with each other for the entirety of your lives. If given the choice, most of us would probably run away from this proposition, thinking it preposterous.

However, this is the way families are built. Children are born and whether or not parents stay together, there is always a family dynamic to contend with. Sometimes it may be a nuclear, traditional family with two parents. More often, though, it's a single-parent household or non-traditional family with extended relatives, stepparents and siblings, grandparents, cousins, etc.

The idea of "family" in America has changed drastically in the last 50 years and we must structure our familial relationships to deal with this new dynamic. Parents are under pressure just like teenagers, but in different ways. While teens are struggling with the pressures of academics, drugs, and sex, parents are dealing with careers, bills, divorces, and raising children.

All of these factors can cause any home to be strained emotionally. To combat these external forces, parent and teen alike must foster solid family relationships. Parents must exhibit the type of behavior they want their teen to mirror. When they're angry, they should take time out to put things in perspective. In the end, listening is key. Always listen twice as much as you talk and your teen will feel that they can share things with you. For especially difficult situations, counseling or educational programs may be useful.
