ADHD Medications For Children

ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a real problem that affects millions of children (and adults, for that matter). For parents, children with ADHD can be quite a handful. Typical symptoms include an inability to focus, constant speaking out of turn, a nervous fidgeting, and uncontrolled behavior in general.

Children with ADHD are often medicated to help them focus and relate to others in a calm manner. However, overuse or abuse of ADHD medications can cause lethargy and a "drugged up" look or behavior in a child. Only medical doctors or other licensed professionals should disperse medications and constant examination should be given to ensure that the medication is still needed.

Methylphenidate drugs, like Ritalin, are generally prescribed for ADHD. In addition, doctors are also prescribing other, longer-lasting forms called Concerta, Focalin, Metadate, and Methylin. Amphetamines and dexamphetamines are also used to stimulate the brain's attention-producing centers. Non-stimulants like Strattera and Wellbutrin have also been successfully used.

Because there are so many choices and each case is different, it is not uncommon for your doctor to try a few different medications before settling on one that works with the least amount of side effects. When used properly and under close supervision by a doctor, these drugs can be very useful for children suffering with ADHD. When abused, these drugs can be harmful and can cause a child to "veg out" or have severe depression, so care should always be taken when dispersing the drugs.
