Wilderness Therapy

Depressed Teenager GirlWilderness therapy uses nature as a tool to transform the lives of at-risk youth. Teens challenge themselves emotionally and physically while sharing their struggles with a positive group of peers, processing their experiences with a team of therapists and staff, and figuring out who they are away from the distractions of daily life at home.

Some therapeutic boarding schools and residential treatment centers for teens incorporate brief wilderness expeditions into the therapeutic milieu. Students may participate in ancient rites of passage such as “solo” experiences in the wilderness or spend a weekend camping with a group of staff and peers in order to shift their perspective and begin to accept accountability for the natural consequences of their actions.
