Relationship Counseling
For many frustrated parents and troubled teens, relationship counseling can be an amazing experience. A third-party, objective counselor can often shed light on a turbulent situation at home. To teens, parents are "lame" and "don't know what they're talking about." To parents, teens are "moody" and "irresponsible." The truth is, there are reasons for everyone's behavior and sometimes it takes an outside opinion to see what's really going on beneath the surface.
A licensed therapist or doctor usually conducts family relationship counseling. To find a qualified therapist in your area, there are several steps you can take. First, check with your insurance company to see what is covered and whom they recommend. Second, try talking to family and friends, who may have suggestions for a great therapist.
Third, call professional organizations found through an Internet search or in phone book listings. Last, every state has a family resource center; check with the local government office for options (these may even be free). Once you've got a good list together, conduct interviews with several therapists to see which professional is the best fit for your family, your situation, and your budget.
Once you've found someone you trust, it is important for all family members to enter into counseling with an open mind. Prepare a list of questions and concerns, but also prepare to listen. Parents, as the authority figures, tend to want to out-talk their teens in these sorts of sessions, but you will find you learn a lot more if you listen twice as much as you talk.
