Adolescent Residential Treatment Centers

One out of every three teenagers in America has tried drugs. That's almost nine million teens. Whether it's abusing prescription drugs, marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamines, or something else, the problem is rampant in our society.

Not all teens who try drugs will become drug addicts. However, millions struggle with drug and alcohol additions every year before their 18th birthday. When all else fails, adolescent residential treatment centers can help. Adolescent residential treatment centers are facilities that house patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can be located in the community or out in remote destinations. These types of programs often include a wilderness component, offering the patient lots of fresh air and outdoor activities.

Residential treatment centers surround teens with supportive, knowledgeable staff who will help them detox and clean up their drug habit. There are two schools of thought on residential treatment centers, due to their often pricey nature. Those opposed to such programs believe they label teens as "addicts" even if they don't have a serious problem. In addition, families are secluded from their teens and are not an active part in the process, causing a more likely chance for relapse upon re-entry into the normal environment.

Proponents feel that total immersion (residential as opposed to outpatient centers) is the only way to go because it removes teens from external pressures, creating a safe environment where they can build their self-esteem and work on individual treatment without interference. Also, these programs surround teens with others just like them who can empathize instead of judge their decisions.
